Friday, September 21 Bond Statement on Passage of the Airline Assistance Bill "The best way to help airline workers is to make sure the airlines keep flying. This emergency legislation will help us keep airline employees at work, and return others to work quickly. I am pleased that this package includes the liability protection for airlines and families that I called for last week. U.S. commercial airlines belong in the air, not the court-room. We can protect the victims' families, consumers and airlines all at the same time and this bill does just that. This legislation is the right response to the attacks on America last week. It is the first step towards improving and restoring the commercial airline industry. The Senate has moved swiftly and wisely and I hope the House follows shortly. The next immediate task before the Senate is to consider quickly legislation to bolster airline security. We must restore public confidence in commercial air travel. Doing so will tell the terrorists that the American people cannot be frightened."
