Sunday, October 7, 4:25 PM BOND COMMENTS ON AIRSTRIKES AGAINST AL QUEDA AND TALIBAN
"Right now, as we speak, thousands of American men and women in uniform are putting their lives on the line in the fight against international terrorism. I have recently spent time in Washington and in Missouri. Everything I have seen -- and based on all my conversations -- tell me that this nation is united in a way that I have never seen before in my adult lifetime. In Washington, there are no democrats or republicans -- only Americans united in their desire to once and for all remove the terrorist threat. All of my colleagues in the senate will do what it requires to give our fighting men and women whatever they need to get the job done well, quickly and safely. The president has rightly asked the American people for their patience. This may not be a short war. There will be no peace treaty or truce or cease-fire like world war one and two, Korea and Vietnam or the Persian Gulf. The American people, our nation, and indeed the world, are on the doorstep of a new era -- one that will be defined by the actions now underway. What our world will look like in five or ten years depends on the action we take in the coming months. That is why I am so heartened by the leadership shown so far by president George W. Bush. He has a fine team and already he has shown great judgement. The terrorist picked a fight with the wrong nation. Just how huge of a mistake this was is something they have begun to discover today. I ask all Missourians to say a prayer for our men and women in uniform, today putting their lives on the line in faraway places. Let us pray that they may come home safely after their mission is accomplished. I think all Americans should say a prayer for their country today."
