Wednesday, October 17, 12:00 PM Bond Discusses Developments in Anthrax Threat to Congress "Recent medical tests have indicated that 31 staff members for Senator Majority Leader Tom Daschle have been exposed to anthrax, which is different than having been infected. The Senate quickly detected the contaminated letter. Affected staff members and those at risk have already been given antibiotics. Whoever sent this contaminated letter is guilty of committing terrorism. Our task is to contain the threat, treat people who have been contaminated and find out who did this. The work of the Senate will continue in the meantime. Let us be clear about this new threat: the terrorists' principle weapon is not anthrax, it is fear -- and that is what they are trying to spread. That is why the terrorists have selected very high-profile targets -- in the hope that the media will help spread fear. In addition, I echo Attorney General John Ashcroft's warning to any copy-cat trouble-makers thinking about sending suspicious powder in the mail: it is illegal and we will find and punish you. Copy-cat trouble makers do real damage by sending emergency crews on wild goose chases - diverting them from potential real sources of danger. We have to protect our emergency resources for real cases of terrorism. For all Missourians who ask what they can do to help, the answer is easy: keep your cool. Be smart, but most importantly, use your heads. The terrorists want to scare us. They can only win if we give into the fear - but WE WILL NOT. We are not afraid. We will not be cowed by this threat. Americans do not face threats - we defeat them." |  |
