Bond Statement on Iraq Developments

"Saddam Hussein has missed every chance to avoid this war.

"What now follows the end of diplomacy is war - something that Saddam Hussein once again brings upon his own people.

"Saddam Hussein has chosen to protect his weapons of mass destruction instead of his own people.

"American forces will do everything to avoid civilian casualties. The same cannot be said for Saddam Hussein.

"The last page in the history of the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein is about to be written. And the Iraqi people are just days away from their liberation.

"In the United States and across the world, we have had vigorous debate on this difficult issue. I respect the views and opinions of most everyone who has spoken. But with war approaching very quickly, it is time to set that debate aside and come together and pray for our troops, our country and the world. Our troops deserve the support of every American. We hope they come home safely and quickly. We pray for a fast war and very few casualties.

"There will be ample time after the smoke clears to review the steps that brought us to war and the steps needed to win the peace.

"We have the legal and moral authority to move forward. The world would be a more dangerous place if we failed to act and allowed greater dangers to accumulate through our inaction.

"Our course is not without risk, but it is the correct one."
