Bond Helps Unveil 9-11 Terrorist Exhibit At Smithsonian Museum of American History

Senator Kit Bond today joined Smithsonian Institution officials to announce an exhibit of artifacts related to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and the Pentagon.

The Smithsonian's American History Museum in Washington, D.C. will house the exhibit.

Bond drafted the legislation which authorized the Smithsonian to spend $5 million for the exhibit, planned to open on the anniversary of the attacks. A member of the Appropriations Committee, Bond is working to secure an appropriation this year for the exhibit.

"Our national motto is E Pluribus Unum, which means `one, out of many.' That is the Smithsonian's challenge: to assemble the many images, artifacts and personal narratives from the terrorist attacks so that one story emerges the story of a nation attacked by surprise and forever changed as a result."

The provision secured by Bond in the law underscores the Smithsonian Institution's lead role in helping future generations of Americans and other visitors understand what happened on September 11, 2001. The Smithsonian Institution said the legislation secured by Bond was "invaluable" because it "put the power of Congress behind our efforts...to collect materials related to the September 11 terrorist attacks." Specifically, the Smithsonian credited the Bond amendment with providing the "nudge" to secure airplane parts, pieces of New York Fire Department trucks and even a piece of the Pentagon's limestone facade.

Bond joined Lawrence Small, Secretary of the Smithsonian; Sheila Burke, Undersecretary for American Museums and National Programs; and Acting Director of the American History Museum Mark Pachter.. The lead curator, Marilyn Zoidis, also attended today's press conference.

The Smithsonian Institution is an independent trust instrumentality of the United States. One of the main purposes of the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History is to show the evolution of the American identity.
