Bond on the War to Free Iraq

Wednesday, March 19, 2003

Even if last night's opening salvo failed to take out the dictator of Baghdad, it nevertheless sent a very powerful message to Saddam Hussein and his regime: the United States is at war with you the leaders NOT the Iraqi people.

Even if we did not get Saddam, our attempt to do so is a psychological weapon itself. He and his cohorts now knows that every minute of every day, wherever he is, he has to worry about cruise missiles and laser-guided munitions coming in through a window.

Saddam brought war upon himself literally. And that has to be troubling to him. And it will complicate his ability to command his military forces. The harder it is on Saddam Hussein, the easier it is on our coalition forces.

Make no mistake Saddam Hussein is a legitimate military target. He wears a military uniform and is in direct control of his security and military forces. Rank is no protection from attack as Saddam Hussein now knows.

This was an unconventional and surprising way to begin the war. And I salute the President for taking the risk. Undoubtedly, it will not be the last such strike as we continue to develop and capitalize on intelligence.

The bomb damage assessment or BDA is underway now. And it may be hours or days before we now with certainty the results of last night's strike against Iraqi leadership.

The main effort has still yet to come.

Not all Americans support this war but we should all support our troops. We should all say a prayer today for those men and women who are risking everything so that we may sleep peacefully tonight.
