BOND STATEMENT ON BLUNT REPORT

July 25, 2001

“All Missourians who support clean elections ought to thank Matt Blunt for this powerful report. He has done Missouri and St. Louis City and County a favor by shining a bright light onto this problem.

“Clearly, we now have even more evidence of an election day conspiracy to steal political power from legal voters in St. Louis City and County.

“Now that we have identified the problem, we have two more tasks ahead of us:

* “First, we must identify and punish those who masterminded the vote fraud schemes identified in this report. For this we await the results of the ongoing federal investigation underway in the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri.

* “Second, we must strengthen state and federal laws to defend against a reoccurrence of this kind of vote fraud. I have introduced legislation at the federal level and urge Missouri lawmakers to use this report to draft appropriate safeguards into Missouri state law.

“This report confirms the sad history of tolerance for vote fraud in St. Louis City and County. We cannot and should not tolerate a continuation of this tradition. The city deserves better than to be known as the up-and-coming vote fraud capital of the United States.

“We must not abandon the overwhelming majority of legal voters in St. Louis City and County. We cannot stand idly by and watch unknown thieves steal their lawfully cast votes.

“We know what the problem is and it is time to act accordingly.”
