KANSAS CITY, MO - U.S. Senator Kit Bond today toured the construction site of Truman Medical Centers' (TMC) Emergency Department in Kansas City. TMC's President and CEO, John Bluford, thanked Bond for the $1 million Bond secured for the expansion.
"Truman is the cornerstone of our health care delivery network in the metropolitan region when it comes to trauma service. That responsibility demands an investment in equipment and facilities to ensure sufficient readiness and capacity in the event of tragedy," said Senator Bond.
As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Bond was able to secure $1 million in federal funds for the modernization of TMC's Hospital Hill Emergency Room, a Level I Trauma Center, in the fiscal year 2003 Omnibus Appropriations bill. Among other things, the funds are being used for state-of-the art cardiac monitoring equipment and portable x-ray equipment.
This modernization will improve patient care in one of Missouri’s busiest emergency departments. The expansion from 27 to 52 beds will streamline care and improve the overall care experience, provide more privacy for patients as well as private areas for special need populations; ensure more accurate and rapid diagnosis through updated technology; and provide better services for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Bond stressed that TMC also plays a critical role in Kansas City's ability to prepare for and respond to the threat of terrorism, bio-chemical attacks or disasters. The expansion will enhance this ability by providing appropriate decontamination capabilities with isolated waiting and triage areas equipped with separate air circulation systems; Level B suit protection for 50 clinicians; and modernized communications capabilities.
The $15.2 million expansion will occur in stages, allowing patients to receive care during construction. Completion of the emergency department is expected in August 2005.
Bond served Missouri twice as Governor and now continues his service to Missourians in the United States Senate.
