WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Kit Bond today praised the arrest of Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadzic.
“While no act will ever erase the terrible memories that plague our Bosnian friends, it is critical the international community works together to bring war criminals like Karadzic to justice,” said Bond. “Last night’s arrest is a victory for the thousands of Bosnians who have made Missouri their home and for all who value justice and human rights.”
Karadzic, who was indicted in 1995 for his role in the massacre of nearly 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica – the worst massacre since World War II – was arrested last night after more than a decade on the run. Karadzic is the mastermind of the ethnic cleansing campaign against Bosnian Muslim, Croat and other non-Serbs that killed 100,000 people following the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991.
The war criminal will now be tried before the United Nation’s war crimes tribunal at The Hague.
Bond added that the world community must still capture and bring to justice Ratko Mladic, Karadzic’s army commander, who remains at large.
