WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kit Bond today met with the chairman of InBev, Carlos Brito, to express his opposition to the foreign takeover of St. Louis’ Anheuser-Busch.

“My Missouri constituents say, this Bud’s not for you,” Bond told Brito when they met.

Bond told the InBev chairman that the takeover of Anheuser-Busch would have far-reaching implications, from the line-worker to the farm field.  Not only would the deal mean job loss for St. Louis workers and a hit to Missouri’s economy, but would hit hard the St. Louis community that depends on A-B for charitable and civic endeavors.

Today’s meeting follows up with Bond’s action last week, when he learned of the possible takeover of Anheuser-Busch the Senator asked the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission to scrutinize the proposed acquisition of the long-time St. Louis’ company.

Large acquisitions, such as the InBev proposed bid to take over A-B, must be reviewed by the Federal government under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act to ensure fair market competition.  Because this proposed acquisition is so large in nature and the harmful impact it would have on the St. Louis community and workers, Bond stressed that it is his responsibility to ensure the federal government considers the impact on consumers and the marketplace, especially as the beer industry continues to consolidate as evidenced by the recent merger of Miller and Molson Coors.
