JOPLIN, MO – U.S. Senator Kit Bond today met with community leaders and employees at Convergent Label Technology in Joplin where he pledged to continue his fight to protect Missouri jobs and spur economic growth.

"I understand enough about capitalism and about our economy to know that the jobs that are produced are almost exclusively produced by people like you, not by the government," said Bond to the employees at Convergent Label Technology.

Although the government can not create jobs, Bond stressed that the government can provide the environment and infrastructure for job creation. He assured those at the company that he will continue to hold the line on taxes, regulations and litigation.

Bond has worked in the Senate to pass critical infrastructure-building bills, including the federal highway bill. As chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee that wrote the federal highway bill, Bond fought to pass the federal highway bill through the Senate and is working to broker an agreement between the House and Senate so it can reach the President's desk for his signature. This bipartisan bill will be big win for Missouri. The $318 billion highway bill includes a minimum guarantee of 95 cents on the dollar for "donor" states, like Missouri. When Bond first became a member of EPW. Missouri only received about 76 cents on the dollar. Missouri will receive $250 million in new dollars to Missouri each year, which is about $1.5 billion in new projects that are not currently planned for.

In June, the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee passed the reauthorization of the Economic Development Administration (EDA). In communities across Missouri, the EDA makes a significant impact, Bond said. Over the last decade, EDA has invested more than $115 million in Missouri. Also, since 1998, EDA funds have led to the creation of over 5,000 jobs. Bond said that this year's reauthorization, which among a number of changes, includes increased funding and incentives for deserving projects, will allow the EDA to better assist communities to develop local economies.

There have been important successes in recent years, Bond told the group. Just last year Bond fought and won a victory to protect 5,000 Missouri small engines jobs – 22,000 manufacturing-related jobs nationwide – from California bureaucrats. He will continue to fight to protect jobs in Missouri and the rest of the country.

Kit Bond is Missouri’s senior Senator and is now in his third term after having served the state previously during two terms as Governor.
