WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kit Bond today lauded Senate passage of a resolution he introduced to designate 2009 as the “Year of the Noncommissioned Officer Corps of the United States Army” for the Corps continual service to the Army and the American people. The resolution was agreed to in the Senate last night by unanimous consent.

“The men and women serving in the noncommissioned officer corps deserve our support and recognition for the job they do.  Our soldiers are the centerpiece of our national security, and the NCO is the back-bone of our Army,” said Bond. “There is no time like the present to honor our soldiers, that is why I am happy my colleagues have agreed to join the United States Army in declaring 2009 the year of the Noncommissioned Officer.”

For more than 200 years, the Noncommissioned Officer Corps of the Army has distinguished itself as the most accomplished group of military professionals in the world. Leading the way in education, training and discipline in the military, the officers serve as role models to the most advanced armies in the world.

The Noncommissioned Officers of the Army share their strength of character and values with every soldier, officer, and civilian they support across the regular and reserve components of the Army. Along with the designation, the resolution encourages the people of the United States to commemorate and recognize the Noncommissioned Officer Corps this year with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
